This is probably the most concise, well illustrated explanation of what happens in the brain will we watch graphic facilitation in action!
From TED 2009: Information designer Tom Wujec talks through three areas of the brain that help us understand words, images, feelings, connections. In this short talk from TEDU, he asks: How can we best engage our brains to help us better understand big ideas?
The secret recipe?
- Use images to clarify ideas.
- Make them interactive.
- Augment memory through visual persistence.
The brain does not, in fact, see the world as it is, but creates a series of mental models constructed from "Ah-Ha" moments. Wujec describes the amazingly complex processes that occur from pen to eyes to the visual cortex of the brain to 30 other parts that continually make more meaning.
The three basic processing centers are:
- The Ventral Stream is the "Whatdetector" of the brain, activated when we give a word to something
- The Dorsal Stream locates the object in physical body space, creating mental maps
- The Lymbic System is the "gut center", the part of the brain that feels
Tom walks us through what happens in what happens when a group works together on physically building a large-scale visual strategic plan.
