Leah Silverman has been supporting facilitated events that use graphic facilitation since 2003.
But it was not until Fall of '07 that she strapped on the markers herself and stepped out as a Graphic Recorder. These are her reflections on her first International Forum of Visual Practitioners Conference:
I had a wonderful time and felt welcomed into this generous community. I also had the great privilege of looking over the shoulders of some amazing graphic recorders. I primarily went to learn more about graphically documenting, and the Graphics 101 course led by Brandy Agerbeck and Lynn Carruthers was very helpful with the basics. I now have a good head start on this new phase of my work path. Next year I'd like to see a possible follow-up course with more emphasis on hands-on practice and more concentration on listening skills and clustering information.

One of the conference highlights was the very competitive chili cook-off. I'm a little biased since the team that I was on won for having the best batch of the bunch. I won't argue with the judges; it was mighty tasty!
The graphics jam was lots of fun and all the sessions were quite informative. During the whole day that I spent in Graphics 101 I missed quite a few talks -- I'm hoping to catch up with Steph Crowley for a one-on-one on her session about finances and action plans.
I compiled a summary of all the charts that were created during the conference, which can be viewed on my site at http://www.designbyleah.com
/2007ifvp_summary.pdf I left turned onto some great music (I need your playlists, Firehawk) and a couple mantras, "content is king", "chaos pilot", and "think big". Looking forward to seeing everyone at the 2008 conference in Chicago.
