The veteran of the US Coast Guard discussed USCG Maritime Law Enforcement in the area of narcotics, fisheries, illegal immigrants and homeland security. He stressed the point of view that “you want to stop them before they get to shore.” The methods of drug enforcement involved choke points, hidden compartments, air drops, LEDETS (law enforcement detachment), go-fasts (high speed vehicles), and helicopter interception. Game Theory involves reducing uncertainty in order to improve decision-making. In two archetype situations Game Theory does not apply to military decision-making. There may be limitations in applying the theory to the terrorist game; just as one has to be careful in applying the same rules to command decision-making.

Dr. Taylor emphasizes: “You have to think of the theory for simple and complex situations and look at this in terms of reducing to a certainty what an opponent will do.”

Submarine Evasion Operations

The sub, featured in the movie Hunt for Red October, was commanded by Sykora who speaks of the techniques used in modern sub warfare.

Dale apologized for not being able to talk about the real world experience, but shared lessons from his training and exercise experiences and how they relate to hider/search theory. He related an exercise involving the SEALs and their submarine approaching an EPA site on a moonless night in the Virgin Islands.
